Programmes

NIT Silchar offers B. Tech. , M. Tech. , and Ph. D. programmes in Electrical Engineering where B.Tech is the undergraduate programme , M.Tech & Ph.D are post-graduate programmes. The details of these programmes are provided below . Read and find out what you need.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME (B. TECH)

The B.Tech Programme consists of 8 semesters and is a professional engineering degree affiliated with and awarded after completion of 4-years of extensive/vast engineering study and research. Electrical engieering students will learn about basic engineering techniques, as other engineering students, during first year course, which includes Engineering Mathematics, Physics , Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering , Engineering Mechanics , Mechanical Activities( Welding, Fitting , Carpentry ,etc.) , Engineering drawing and Basic Programming. From second year they are exposed to core electrical engieering subjects like Power Systems, Control Systems, Electrical Machines, Instrumentation, Switchgear and Industrial Protection, Microprocessors and Microcontrollers etc. Apart from these, the final year students can choose from a wide array of electives in the form of Computer Aided Power Systems, Flexible AC Transmission etc. In coordination with the highly stimulating lectures and quality enhancing tutorials in these courses, various practical courses are also held in the state-of-the-art Lab facilities of the department like Machine Lab, Measurement Lab, Circuit Theory Lab and Microprocessor Lab, to name a few. The Department of Electrical Engineering is dynamic and vibrant in true sense. Various research and development activities taken up by the department put the students on busy schedules enabling them to blend to the modern industrial requirements. The course structure is constantly restructured to meet the ever changing requirements of the volatile industrial market, keeping the essence of the core Electrical Engineering intact. The pure expertise and dedication of the faculty members along with infrastructural facilities coupled with the perseverance of the students have catapulted the branch to the top league. Placement offers to the students have always shown an ever increasing trend and promise to be the best in future with the incoming boom of Power sector. The department also has its own society, the ‘Electra’ comprising of the faculty members and the 300 strong student members. It caters to all the academic and co-curricular persona of the branch. Cultural events for the members are never scarce along with quizzes, aptitude tests, presentations and industrial tours which are organised to bring the best out of a today’s Electrical Engineer.

POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME (M. TECH.)

The Electrical Engineering Department offers four Semester M.Tech. Programmes in Control and Industrial Automation (CIA) and Power and Energy System Engineering. The standard M. Tech. is a two year programme, where the first two semesters are spent doing courses. A one-year project commences in end of the 2nd semester . The project typically has a strong research component. The programme is designed such that a student can complete it based on advanced coursework alone. However, the students are given the option to concentrate on a problem by substituting some of the courses with equivalent project work.

      Control and Industrial Automation

The Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) of the M.Tech. specialization in ‘Control and Industrial Automation (CIA)’ are:
PEO1: The postgraduates of CIA will do their research, developmental, technical and non-technical works to solve real-life problems for acceptable, implementable and sustainable solutions.
PEO2: The postgraduates of CIA will demonstrate their ethics, professionalism, life-long learning ability, productive-psychomotor and affective domains skills, and ability to work in a team through their day-to-day works.
PEO3: The postgraduates of CIA will exhibit their effective oral and written communication skills in their daily activities.

M. Tech. programme in Control and Industrial Automation under Department of Electrical Engineering at National Institute of Technology Silchar has been designed to impart the following skills and abilities amongst the successful students, as stated under (1) through (5) below:
PO1: An ability to carry out research/investigation and development work independently and as a member of a team to solve practical problems.
PO2: An ability to write and present with effective communication skill, a substantial technical report/document
PO3: Students should be able to demonstrate a degree of mastery over the area of Control Systems and Industrial Automation. The mastery should be reflected through their solution approaches by considering society, environment, economy and sustainability.
PO4: Students should be able to demonstrate their ethics, professionalism and ability for lifelong learning.
PO5: Students should be able to exhibit productive psychomotor and affective domains skills.

         Power and Energy Systems Engineering

The Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) of the M. Tech. specialization in ‘Power and Energy Systems Engineering (P&ESE)’ are:

PEO1: The postgraduates of P&ESE will demonstrate their outstanding education skills that will enable them to integrate undergraduate fundamentals with the knowledge acquired to evaluate and analyze new developments in Power and Energy industry.
PEO2: The postgraduates of P&ESE will demonstrate advancement in engineering skill to engage in perpetual learning to undertake significant research and or developmental projects even in multidisciplinary environment to meet the societal requirements.
PEO3: The P&ESE postgraduates will demonstrate their professional, ethical and social issues and show respect for diversity and global issues for successful professional career.

M. Tech. program in Power and Energy System Engineering under Department of Electrical Engineering at National Institute of Technology Silchar has been designed to impart the following skills and abilities amongst the successful students, as stated under (1) through (4) below:
PO1: An ability to independently carry out research /investigation and development work to solve practical problems.
PO2: An ability to write and present a substantial technical report/document.
PO3: Students should be able to demonstrate a degree of mastery over the area as per the specialization of the program. The mastery should be at a level higher than the requirements in the appropriate bachelor program.
PO4: Students should be able to work independently/ in a team with high ethical values towards social, environmental and economic issues.

DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD)

The Ph.D. programme is a post-graduate programme focussed on original research, that can lead to publications in premier conferences or journals. It is the highest level of degree that a student can achieve. Students are required to do some courses in the first few semesters (course work required can vary based on student background), but soon move on completely to research. Many Ph.D scholars teaches B.tech students also and many labs are run by them.
